Extensions, loft conversions, garden rooms and single rooms

Not every air-to-air install is about a whole-home heating replacement. One of the most popular uses is heating and cooling a single space that your existing system struggles to reach: a new extension, a converted loft that overheats in summer and freezes in winter, a garden office, or a south-facing bedroom. A single-split — one small outdoor unit and one indoor head — does this cleanly in four to eight hours, without the cost and disruption of extending your radiators and boiler to the new space, and gives you cooling that no radiator ever will.

Be clear-eyed about the grant, though. The £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is for replacing your home's heating system with air-to-air — not for adding a unit to one room while the rest of the house keeps its existing heating. So a single-room comfort install almost always falls outside the grant. What does still apply is 0% VAT (to 31 March 2027) on a fixed unit that provides heating, which takes a fifth off the price versus the old 20% rate. If your goal is grant money, you're looking at a whole-home replacement (see eligibility); if your goal is to fix one uncomfortable room affordably, a single-split without the grant is often the right, honest answer — and we'll say so.

Before you commit: the £2,500 grant only pays out through an MCS-certified air-to-air installer, and those are scarce in 2026. Air-to-air also makes no hot water, so you keep a separate hot-water source. We’ll tell you honestly if it doesn’t suit your home — no obligation, no pushy calls.
